Well done Giles – many congratulations to you plus to Matt and Pete. A good end to a successful season!
You will have one more domestique next year too . . . . .
Congratulations fella’s!! Awesome result!
Thanks for your congratulations, it’s appreciated, it’s been one of our season’s goals so it’s nice to report mission accomplished. there were 8 events with 5 to count. Because of other commitments we only rode 5 events. all our events consisted of A and B riders. the B (45 -50) riders were of no concern to our overall aspirations because they have their seperate competition.
event # 1 March was in staffordshire in March. I managed to sneak into an early break which was mostly B’s and only two A’s. This gained loads of time on the bunch and with only one other guy to watch I easily got maximum points. Pete then came in on his own for 3rd and Matt then outsprinted the bunch to get 5th.
event # 2 April. was nr leeds. here the As raced on our own. Pete didn’t ride this event. after a frustrating race of jumping and chasing flat out followed by some freewheeeling as we all got out breath it was still all together with 10m to go. At this point the B race caught us. to avoid confusion we let them past and waited for them to get up the road before we started racing again. when we did it was only 2km from the finish. Matt then put in an awesome attack and only one rider could go with him. they stayed away and unfortunately Matt got 2nd. The guy who won was the then points and scratch race national champion. Of course the scratch champion is now Pete. I then won the gallop from those left to take 3rd.
event # 3 May. Skegness. again pete didn’t ride. I attacked from the gun and was joined by a B rider. we stayed away for a lap. as soon as we got caught a counter attack went and I nipped accross to the two guys up the road. we battered it through and off for the rest of the race but never really got more than a minute or so. then with 1m to go we got caught by a chasing group of three. there was no way they were going to take the race away from us after we’d put in all the hard work and i managed to outsprint them all for the win. Matt came in with the bunch and
event 4 August Chester. Matt, pete and I rode. by this time there had been other events that we’d not ridden but I was still leading overall. The nearest challenger was Darren Otter. all I had to do to secure the series win was to beat Darren. we rode excellently as a team closing down everything all day and really frustrating the opposition. however and virtually in sight of the line i made a hash of it and in a classic example of inattention and bad positioning darren escaped from me and the bunch with 2 miles to go. Pete had just been away on his own in a bid for freedom and after working tirelessly for the team’s goals so it was down to me to chase – which i should have done had i had more courage. as it was I didn’t chase, i just sat there and hoped that he would get swallowed up in the bunch’s surge for the line. Obviously this fantasy failed to turn into reality (it rarely does!) and I had to settle for fourth to get some points at least
event 5 Wolverhampton. last race, me still in the lead by three points. only darren can beat me. matt in 3rd and pete in 6th overall. Phil turned up to lend a hand and the scene was set. team tactics were that i would follow darren all day and make sure i was never more than 1 inch from his rear tyre and the other guys would try and get up the road and take all the points while Matt would stay with me in case I punctured (he uses shimano whereas pete’s a die hard campag man you see). we were all psyched up for a hard day out and then darren failed to turn up. with the series won i could just meander about all day and enjoy the ride. Matt had the opposite idea and released from all his responsibilities jumped away from the gun. him and his fellow escapee scampered up the road like excited puppies and quickly got a lead of three minutes before the pace in the bunch picked eventually leading to a selection of the strongest riders to form a second group formed which inevitably included Pete. they must have ridden like the wind because they soon caught Matt and the other guy. in the end Matt’s head fell off after he’d been out front for more than 50m. on any other day he would have won that race i’m sure of it. pete performed magificently to finsih the race 3rd overall and 2nd A. some time later I finished at the head of what was left of the bunch where i was irritatingly beaten by Phil Wilkins for the sprint. I can now blame it on a snapped spoke and a slow front wheel puncture but I didn’t have an excuse at the time. anyway I didn’t really care cos I was 4th A for some more points and already had the series win. pete’s epic ride moved him up to equal third overall to complete an epic viner domination of the overall standings for the season overall.
all very satisfying.
Nice one Giles, congratulations. Also to Matt and Pete, brilliant effort.
Giles, sounds fantastic ! Must be so satisfying especially after last year
Also great to see Matt and Pete on the same overall podium. All 3 of you have had a fantastic season
Well earned rest sounds good
Hi All,
I think Giles did a great job this year winning the series and for me, getting third was a nice bonus from the end of the season. But, the best thing for me this year has been riding as a team. I was made up in the summer winning a title that I had targeted but it was much better having Matt there than winning on my own. All the road races we have competed in together have really made the season enjoyable. It also gives us something to learn. The penultimate Percy Stallard was a complete mess really. We knew what had to do, which was not let Darren Otter get points, but we still all wanted to win the race – conflict of interest. In the end, ego got the better of me and I attacked near the end. Darren went just as I got pulled back and I didn’t have the legs to hold him. Giles, as he says, missed that final move and we were left wanting in the crucial two minutes of the race. But we learnt from our mistakes and even if Darren had turned up on Sunday there is absolutely no way he would have beaten us – as a team we had only one goal. Its a great feeling to ride with frame of mind.
So, thank you all for making the year fun.
Ps, its not over yet. Three more LVRC National Championships up for grabs.
