Climb On Bikes RR

This morning, myself, Charler, Greek, Dave Lee and Weave raced the Climb On Bikes RR at Sutton, Hereford. And what a day it was – although sadly not all for the right reasons, as poor Weave got taken down badly right at the end :-(    Here’s how it panned out….

After some kit-dithering from the team before the start, we set off on the 4x 16mile circuit in bloody horrible p*ssing down rain. It was a good route, best described as rolling, with a series of sapping pulls on the return leg and a tight and twisty run in before the finish. Epic boys were showing their presence all day, trying a few digs off the front but no one really wanted to give it a go, so when a couple of guys did manage to slope off the front, it looked at one point like they might stay away, as no-one seemed to want to pull it back.

Enter Dave the Greek, who decided that no break was going to get away on his watch, and spent a good few miles hauling the bunch back up to the escapees. A massive turn it was, of Jens Voight proportions :-) Everyone else seemed content to sit on him, but like Greek said ‘if I didn’t do anything, the break would’ve stayed away’ – which was true because everyone was just looking at each other. So it came down to the last lap and the pace cranked up as everyone anticipated a last minute gallop. Weave tried his luck, but the guy who went with him, rather pointlessly, decided not to take a pull. Two guys belted off the front on the winding road just prior to the finish, and almost made it but they got caught up when the sprint started winding up. Which is where things got nasty.

The two riders, sensing their attack had failed, sensibly pulled to the left and sat up as the pack caught them. One guy decided that, as he was blocked on the right, he’d try and force his way between the verge and the two caught and slowing riders, as the line was fast approaching. From what the marshalls said afterwards, there was no gap there for anyone to ride through, and so almost inevitably, he caught the bars of one the riders and they both hit the deck. Weave was riding directly behind this guy and before he could even think about evasive action, he was down. He was less than 5 feet from the line. It has to be said a slow moving commisaire’s car on the other side of the road, which inexplicably impeded the sprint, may have contributed to a number of riders moving left, which would only have made things even tighter on Weave’s side of the road.

Once over the line, Dave, Charler and myself congratulated each other on what (we think) were 3 top ten finishes (Charler 5th, after grabbing 8th yesterday; me 8th and Dave 9th or 10th I think?). We all heard the crash but had no reason to think one of our guys was involved. Dave had to rush back home for a family birthday (he thought it was only 3 laps of the circuit not 4!) so Charler and I span round to go back to the finish. It wasn’t until we realised almost the whole field had passed by us, and no Phil, that we suspected the worst.

We found Greek (who, recovering after his efforts had finished safely in the bunch) a couple of medics and marshalls surrounding Weave who was lying flat out on the road. It was a very sobering sight, and you tend to feel a little helpless to be honest. To our relief he was talking, but it was clear he was in pain and you could tell from how he was positioned on the ground that something wasn’t right. The ambulance came and picked him up, whilst we went over logistics of getting his bike and car back home. After we were changed we went to the hospital to see him. It turns out that along with the usual road rash etc, he’s dislocated his shoulder and badly dislocated his hip. He was chirpy and chatty, but that might have been the gas and air ! Last news was that he’d been in surgery under general anesthetic to have his hip re-set. At least nothing was broken and no head injuries though I guess. Get well soon mate.

The COB marshalls (especially Luke & Paula Moseley), the medics and the organising staff deserve a special mention for how they dealt with the situation, and they went out of their way to look after Weave and indeed us, back at HQ. Big thanks guys.

On the positive side, more points for the team, plus I got to drive Epic One back home :-)

Guys, Please accept my sincere apologise, I rushed back to the HQ, grabbed licence and drove home, still in my wet kit at warp factor 10, fearing the grave consequences if I was late. On ringing Phil’s phone with no reply I became frantic fearing the worst, confirmed when Matt answered Phil’s phone. To be honest I felt numb and very upset that one of our own has been so badly injured :-( Felt so much better receiving a text from Phil tonight, having had things popped back into place OUCH He mentioned poorly bike too so he’s probably looking forward to choosing a shiny new one ;-)

The race, as Matt says, Greek put in a couple of awesome efforts and I can confirm he had the whole peleton strung out, nice one Dave :-)

Special mention for Charler, with Phil’s crash rightly taking the spot-light, our Charler has snook under the radar and achieved his 3rd Cat licence this weekend, so CONGRATULATIONS Charler Whey you go :-)

Get well soon Phil :-) :-)

Don’t be daft mate, no need to apologise. Apart from the crash – obviosuly, it was a really good day today. And nice one Charl, heroic weekend of point-grabbing mate!

Can’t really add much to what’s already been said, other than to agree with Matt that the way Phil was looked after by the ClimbOn marshals/medics, (even gibbo was holding an umbrella over him to keep the pouring rain off) was brilliant and I would like to say a big thank you to all of them.

Best wishes go out to Phil for a speedy recovery, seeing him in the hospital was a very sobering time and one that I hope no of us ever have to relive. Phil was very brave when asked how much pain out of 10 he was in only gave them an 8. Hero!

Just a quick thanks to all that have helped me with my racing this season. I have picked up 3rd cat status over the weekend. I picked up 7th at Shrewsbury not 8th. I didn’t realise, but I was beaten to the line by a girl who wasn’t in our race. (yes, ha, ha, beaten by a girl!!) Who cares though, extra points for me!

Gotta give a big pat on the back to the mighty Greek. It was his willingness to work to catch the breaks (I did help once or twice ;) ) that meant I had a chance to get the result. Thanks mate, I’ll be looking at how I can repay the favour. (I feel like a 50p coffee at the hospital wasn’t really sufficient :) )

Great to see Matt (getting his first BC points, well deserved) and Dave come in right behind me to make it 3 riders in the top ten.

Just a note. I picked up Weave’s race licence after the race.

Not much i can add either. Dave L, as ever, rode an excellent race, really nice to see Fluff getting his first points and to see Charler getting his 3rd Cat. Even nicer was seeing Weave, albeit still slightly crumpled, sat up in bed talking about the race with nothing broken!

Really enjoyed the race and the coffee was fine Charler ( who certainly did help me out ). I was more than happy to put the effort in, it’s what this team is all about :) In any case i couldn’t see anything through my contact lenses with all the spray/mud in the bunch!!! ;)

Also need to say the COB crew were ace in looking after Phil, thanks very much!! :)

Devastating news! Very upsetting to here one of the team have been injured so all the very best to Phil for a speedy recovery.

It sounds like the team did it’s job once again placing 3 in the top 10 and it probably would have been 4 if Phil hadn’t been taken out!

Been to see Phil our ‘Road Warrior’ this afternoon in his hospital bed. Very surprised to see Phil sat up in bed, that wasn’t the surprise, NO, I was surprised he wasn’t wearing his ‘Viner print’ lycra jim jams :-)

Phil was very upbeat and I was astonished really in his general demeanour, considering his roadside injuries I was expecting a bit more blood and snot and even an axe still embedded in his helmet from some road rage following his off. Ok so a little dramatic but believe me it was great to chew the fat for an hour ;-)

Luckily for Phil it seems that the worst of the road rash is on his arse, luckily for me he did want me to look, to give him a ’sit rep’ update Phew. If he asks if you want to see his road rash scars YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ha ha :-)

My visit was cut short when a porter came to take him for his scan, if that shows no breaks or fractures he may escape home tonight. If anyone planning to pop their head in to say Hi then text him first Ta :-) Late season races now the plan but SHHH dont tell Anna :-) Only joking Anna if you read this ;-)

Falling off is never ok but being brought off by some numpty letting his incompetance get the better of him is a nightmare. Happily Phil looks like he’ll be ok and will live to ride another day.

Phil, you’re supposed to be the team’s climbing hero. What are you doing messing with your health in a bunch gallop? Next thing we know you’ll lose the ability to ride for more than 200m without a wheel to follow and will be selling your tri bars!

anyway, sounds like the arrival of Jens the Greek means that Matt W has some competition as the team’s “mr big licks”. his arrival at the front sounded fab and looked like it laid the foundation for a phil Victory. I’m sorry it didn’t come off.

    Get well soon mate.

Hi, i noticed that you guys had an awesome turnout to the COBRR and i could see that you were going to finish well when i saw you lined up ready to go at about the 60 mile mark.
I noticed that there were applications to join and i wondered if you would want a rook like me. One thing though, i was 1 of the guys caught up in the crash from behind and i would like to apologise if i did anything wrong, and ive been worried about it, but all i saw was the guy infront of me going down and shouting and then there was someone under my bike before i could even touch the brakes. I dont know if any1 noticed me stumbling around just past the finish thinking i was ok and didnt notice that the road had gone through my jerseys and the skin on my back so rode back to the hq.

Well done guys on what was again a superb performance and sadly the untimely crash at the end is one of the perils of road racing. Giles is right – Weave is becoming a Robbie McEwen!

Now the gas and air has worn off he is still very chirpy (isn’t he always!) and we have installed a new phone system after the floods of calls from well wishers. After ringing, the computer answers and gives you options of:

    - Press 1 for a hospital update
    - Press 2 for planned recovery time
    - Press 3 for all other enquiries.

    :)

It was great for all the callers, visitors (yes, people rode over to check Weave was alive) and all out thoughtful customers for their wishes. These have been forwarded to Weave via several methods (wait until you check your swollen Inbox Phil!).

As for Drew’s explanation, it sounds like there was very little you could do and just added to the ‘road-kill’. No hard feelings I am sure. :)

    Hi Guys,

I popped to see Phil last night in Hospital and was amased how okish he was looking compared to my last vision of him as I was doing my marshalling duties at the finish line. At the scene we all tried our best to give comfort and support to everyone affected.

Phil seemed to be complaining more about the hospital food compared to his injuries, however I gave him a maxim bar (emergency rations !) just incase things got really bad.

I must say seeing people and your friends injured right infront of you had quite an emotional effort on me, you try your very best give some comfort and support but you cant help experience this gut wrenching feeling of being so helpless.

Some say crashes are all part of the risk of racing however I think it’s quite a shock when it happens and you certain would’nt wish this on anybody.

So from myself and on behalf of all at Climb-on-Bikes CC we wish Phil and others with injuries a speedy recovery.

    Bye for now,

    Robin.

Thanks Robin by all accounts the crash was dealt with admirably at the race and minimised distress. I visited Phil quite late last night and he was frustrated because the scan results were not back so he’s in until they come back. I don’t think the docs quite believe he doesn’t have a break in the hip joint.

He was in very good spirits – I was amazed to be honest considering what he has been through.

I took my turbos and spare bike down just in case he fancied a spin but he wasn’t overly keen ;)

Hey Drew, the list of riders is expanding at a quick rate, I think mainly to the fact we don’t take ourselves too seriously and ride to enjoy :-) It has certinly worked and I’m sure that if you are interested you would be welcomed as keenly as everyone else has been :-)

Robin, your concern for Phil has been welcome and refreshing. I think I can say on behalf of Epic riders, it was a fantastic event and the addition of outriders is excellent :-)

Luckily, Phil’s absence can easily be absorbed as the shop is really quiet at the moment and there are no big events in the pipeline OR MAY BE NOT :-( Don’t know why Phil is in such a rush to get home cos Chris has been round and set up an office there :-)

    Get well soon

:) Il be sending my app off soon then. I was just wondering how it worked, would i have to earn a place on the RT or could i apply for that straight away and have the sponsored jersey subsidised? I am a member of my uni cycling team, but there are only 3 real road riders and we live at opposite ends of the country, so i am looking for a team to train with, race with and learn from.

I looked in the dictionary but . . . can’t seem to understand this ‘quiet’ word everyone keeps talking about.

The home office is complete. We are fitting Phil’s chair with castors so he can whizz around the store too. Best rehab is to work your socks off, I’ve heard. :)

    May 20, 2009 at 10:58 am

Phew…back home! In the home office ;-)
Those CT scans took a long while to come through but the news was all good – apparently the delay was because I am a freak :-) And the scans had to be repeatedly re-checked etc. It was the first time that anyone had come out of a “posterior dislocation of the hip” without a fracture, so I count myself pretty lucky to be a freak… It will be few weeks before I am back to any kind of proper riding, but a short time with crutches and a brief rest up is not a bad result all things considered :-)
I am keen to say thanks personally to everyone that helped out at the road race on Sunday and especially to those who were there at the finish – both at the roadside and back at the hospital/ferrying Epic One round etc! It is difficult to single anyone out for special thanks as it was a truly heartwarming effort from lots of folk, but Paula and Luke Moseley were amazing – sitting on the tarmac with me for so long in the pouring rain was a step beyond the norm from Luke…
I thought the race itself was very well organised and marshalled on a good interesting course. Until the last 2 or 3 seconds I really enjoyed it, even in the wet – so much so that after a couple of tester attacks I was well up for the sprint even after being blocked a couple of times. Don’t know what came over me Giles…must have been mixing in the wrong company :-)
I didn’t see any cars obstructing the way through at the finish but I was on the near side so wouldn’t have had a clear view – it all got a little congested as we charged for the line but the trigger was a rider going down to my left next to the verge and sliding under my front wheel just as I was hitting top speed and coming through. I have no idea what happened next… A pity, but these things happen in road racing and it won’t stop me coming back for more once mended :-)
Thanks to to everyone that sent me messages or came in to the hospital – it was really appreciated. And well done to Charler on your 3rd Cat!

    Thanks again, Phil.

Hi Drew – thought I’d post this comment up separately as it might get lost in the previous reply…
Were you wearing a Uni club jersey on Sunday? I spotted one several times in the bunch so guess that could be you!
You would be very welcome to join the club – especially after your crash baptism on Sunday :-)
As you will gather from the postings on this blogsite we are a club and race team that is all about going out to enjoy riding and racing together. I think we are all having a great time riding as a team/club, whether in races or sportives etc – it is just so much more enjoyable than riding solo or in a club without a real team/fun spirit.
While we have some very good riders, and the results are certainly coming (thanks in large part to the whole team thing), we are not at all elitist and are very keen to help people gain more experience and feel supported as they get more into road racing. Many of the Epic riders are very experienced and have lots of tips to pass on, and all will be only too happy to offer help where they can.
The process is simply to send us an application form (should be available on the membership page above), which covers both the Road Club and Race Team. There is no sense of “earning a place” on the RT – the main thing is that you are keen to road race and that you will fit into the team ethos/atmosphere…and from your initial post above I think that you will probably fit in nicely :-)
    Welcome aboard!

:) Yeah i was wearing my uni jersey, il send my app off soon. Would i be able to get the RT jersey with my membership as being a student money is fairly tight :P . Is there a time every week which you normally try to ride together? I live about an hour away in Redditch, but i commute an hour to university and before that used to commute an hour to work so im used to and enjoy the travelling so would make it as often as possible.

Great to hear you are back home Phil apparently Anna’s been working on a DIY list for you whilst you have been in hospital and has purchased the NHS paint effect crutch attachments complete with brushes and stencils ;)

When will you be able to ride a bike again? Is mid-June long enough to recover from your injuries – hope so it would be great to recce the Devil Ride then as a few more can make it like Dave and Fluff.

I am keen to ride the GFC this Sunday as it’s a fantastic route and the weather is looking good.

    Me
    Simon
    Greg
    Charler
    Drew

    Have I missed anyone?

Plan is to meet at Bala lakeside activity/sports centre, (town side of the lake). All agree that 8am is too early so a 10am start has been suggested although this might be a tad late so how about 9am as a compromise?

Park on the road or in the town and ride down as you have to pay to park at the centre and we could be some time ;/

    How does that sound?
